...Knocked Up is anti-woman. :eyes: Anyone care to challenge this assertion? I've just been itching to complain about the title of this film, and this is my way of doing it. ;) No way in hell I'd bring it up in GD or other areas of DU.

1. The formula certainly is
but reviewers seem to love it: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/knocked_up/

The feeling I get from reading all the reviews is that the movie focuses on the male lead and the female lead is a pregnant prop.

Since it's gotten so many great reviews, I'll probably watch it on DVD. I can't guarantee I'll make it through to the end.

(besides, what woman takes 8 weeks to figure out she's pregnant? Most get a clue in 3 or 4, tops)

2. Interesting review

Thank you for the link. I agree with you that the formula is definitely there. A few other aspects that make it sounds like the pregnant woman is used as a prop (for laughs) are in this review:

http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/movie/10302458/review/14934205/knocked_up?source=movie_reviews_rssfeed

I'm especially fond of the scene where the women can't get into the club--one for being too old, the other too pregnant. :eyes::puke:
Lovely. And then there's this gem (cut and paste from the review):

The sex scene in which he props himself on top of Alison's swollen belly and nearly faints at the thought of his penis poking away at the fetus is one for the comedy time capsule.

I find the reviewer's delight with it all rather annoying. If you ever watch, let us know what you think. I don't think I can stomach it.

3. I laughed my ass off in the beginning
The men were portrayed as the pigs many of them remain, post middle school. The woman was somewhat of a prop but her mindset could be representative of some women's, I suppose.

At first, her choice (to continue the pregnancy), came off less pro-life, than "ooh gaga" stupid, to me. And the club scene was actually eye-opening to the truth about how women (and minorities) are treated when they are not considered "desirable". There were some thought provoking scenes about men and women, in their perceived roles, in general. The human foibles (of both genders), attempting the traditional American Dream, were addressed with a degree of respect for the woman's disadvantage. Who knows, though, I could be reading more into it then was intended.

As for:

The sex scene in which he props himself on top of Alison's swollen belly and nearly faints at the thought of his penis poking away at the fetus is one for the comedy time capsule.

Someone was eavesdropping in my bedroom 16.35 years ago. I lived that scene almost to the word. I couldn't help but lol.

The flick died for me, however, as it proceeded through to the highly unlikely, happily ever after, fairy tale conclusion (of the privileged white middle class); which could not have been a more pro-birth, save-the-fetus, you'll-be-glad-you-did-the-right-thing, ending. Triple :puke:

4. I was wondering about this, too
...and I'm SO glad you brought it up. If it was going to go for the whole pro-birth thing. (sigh) I also wondered about the message it sends to young women about turning a "one night stand" into a future "father." If it ends how I think you're saying it ends, I would be inclined to do this, too... :puke:

I can see how (and appreciate) why you would laugh at some moments. If they tapped into the truth of a moment, that IS and can be very funny.

I'm also happy to see your analysis. I just wonder if the "typical" audience for this film would GET any of that....any of the stuff you could easily see at a deeper level. Would they be inclined to "think" at all or analyze the content? Or if they would be more inclined to just go with the cheap laugh at the "old chick", "the pregnant chick", and those unattractive minorities that can't get into club?

Know what I mean? ;)

Thanks for sharing about it--glad it wasn't all "woman as prop", etc. :hi:

5. Um, many women need more than "3 to 4" weeks "tops" to find out they're pregnant.

Nice comment. Could you please consider re-reading the posting guidelines for this group?

6. I won't see it....
one reason is because I'm so sick and tired of these gorgeous women being paired with dog-butt ugly guys. Now, I know that may seem shallow, but this is every dog-butt ugly guy's dream and I don't want young women out there thinking that is what they have to settle for.

Every damn sitcom on TV has the same thing....gorgeous wife/girlfriend and ill-mannered and ill-groomed dork. When do the not-so-gorgeous women get a hunk? Or even cast into a sitcom? (Not since Roseanne, that I can remember.)

And the title of the movie really bugs me. It should be titled 'Hey, Ugly. Ejaculate Responsibly'

7. You'll get no quarrel here, sister!
Shallowness is really only considered a negative trait in women. If you choose men for their looks or for their money, you're a bitch. Men get the convenient Biology Excuse to use to beat women over the head with for not resembling the ingenue du jour. You know, how they supposedly can only be attracted to wasp-waisted, doe-eyed teenagers.

Oh but they're still nice guys. :puke:
