| US Qualifies for World Cup (2-0 win vs. Mexico) |
|
The US National Team beat a surprisingly flat Mexico side 2-0 Saturday, in Columbus. Steve Ralston scored the first US goal, into an open net after Oguchialu Onyewu's header hit off of the post. A few minutes later, the second goal was scored by Damarcus Beasley, after a fantastic pass from Claudio Reyna. Beasley almost scored another in the 90th minute, after yet another fantastic pass by Reyna, but his chip went wide to the left.
I was impressed with Onyewu in this game - he shut Borgetti down, and he caused the US some very serious problems in the first qualifier between the two. I was also surprised that, in particular, Fonseca for Mexico was as invisible as he was - he made one good run, and even then wasn't spotted by Borgetti.
The US need to find an answer on the right side of midfield - despite the goal, Ralston wasn't as successful going forward as he could have been, and he certainly doesn't have the pace of Beasley on the opposite side.
