If you live in the SF Bay area, check your local Albertson's for cheap polyester throws. This past weekend, they had them on sale for 3/$10. I bought two and snuggled under them to watch TV on Saturday night. I stayed nice and warm and didn't have to turn on my furnace.

| 2. I'm doing my best not to use my furnace this winter |
|
I live in Oakland, where it seldom gets below freezing. I can afford to have heat, almost, I think. But I refuse to pay the robber barons.
We've already had a few cold-ish nights (in the low 40's). I found that if I wear a turban on my head (which is right near the window), I maintain a lot of body heat. Also, putting the stuffed animals in the bed with me retains heat.

| 3. I wonder how I will do this |
|
I can cover myself... but the birds... we have three feathered children and I fear for them... but they will have to adapt to a slightly colder house...

Luckily, my pet snakes have their own heaters under their cages. They'd be very happy to hibernate, anyway.

|

As is I will be looking for area heaters... the rooms the three of them are are not large at all, and I may be able to heaet them with area heaters

| 6. The eheat heaters are perfect for a bird room. |
|
No drafts, low cost, and they work.
We've had ours a week, and I'm going to order another one next pay-day.

| 7. In a similar vein, one can try Army-Navy surplus stores for wool blankets. |
|
I haven't done this, but saw an article a while ago that said they were tremendous buys, typically. They may not be as pretty as the blankets you might get at the bon marche, but they are warm, practical, and will last nearly forever. (And who will really see them anyway, they will be hidden between sheet and bedspread.)

| 8. they are wool, so I can't use them as DH is allergic to wool |
|
and they are designed for a cot so on a king or queen you'll need to stitch two together. That being said they are a good warm blanket
also check your local thrift stores, I find heavy comforters there every day at very reasonable prices

| 9. I've bought them and they do work quite well. |
|
Also, I buy handcrocheted afghans at my local thrift store. Some are very pretty and very heavy-so pretty that I spread them on top of my comforter for the colors and the patterns! The big bargain-I've found them starting at $1.50 an afghan. And they keep you very warm.
