| Have you ever used vinegar as a substitute for Jet Dry in the dishwasher |
|
I use the Jet Dry type products in my dishwasher. Tonight, the display showed that the dispenser was empty. Since I shopped this afternoon and don't make trips to the store for just one item I thought maybe I could use the white distilled vinegar. I have a Bosch that's about 2 yrs old.
It works great in the rinse cycle for clothes in the washing machine, btw.

And the glassware is spotless. I don't know why the Jet Dry products have to be so pricey. I guess because we were willing to pay. Not any more.
Vinegar is amazing stuff.

We live just west of Denver and the water is fairly hard.
Hope it works out for you and I'm glad it's timely! :D

but I use cheap white distilled vinegar in the wash to remove soap residue and minerals because the water here is rock hard. I buy the two gallon containers of it at Costco and dump it a cup at a time into the rinse. It's made a huge difference in how white the whites are and how much less whitish glop remains on the colored stuff.
I would imagine it would work much the same way in a dishwasher to remove soap scum that causes spotting on dishes.
I've never had a dishwasher, so I really haven't investigated the chemistry much. I've always wondered if Jet Dry weren't glycerine, working like wetting solution in photography.
However, if the vinegar works, so much the better. It's cheaper.

I can't put more than a little bit in the washing machine since it's a front loader. The slot in the drawer only allows for about a 1/4 of a cup or it starts emptying into the drum. But I think I'll open the door and add more vinegar when the rinse cycle starts. That's easy enough to do. I especially want to do that for the whites.

like I did my mom's washing machine, lol. I have always just done them in the sink.......
I know - I'm a pathetic Luddite.......but it's one less thing to miss and have to get used to living without when the Big Bad happens. No one needs to waste diesel trucking a dishwasher across the country to satisfy MY needs.....
