1. That's palatial by homesteader standards

but instead of finishing those interior walls, he should have used his lumber more wisely in constructing a chicken coop and fencing a chicken run, as well as a small barn for goats or sheep. Critters are life or death when it comes to homesteading because they can eat all the stuff we can't and will give us eggs, milk and more of their kind in return for our sheltering them.

I did the back to the land thing in the 70s, rented farmland for a huge organic garden and discovered I'm an extremely poor farmer. I hope whoever this is has more talent and/or better luck.
