Arrived yesterday at my 34 hour a work week job to find myself called into the office of the head of the small company for which I work. I was unceremoniously told that "this is your last week" HUH? I was hired last December to fill a new slot in a very new company. My years of experience in the field make my services attractive to them. Mind you, I'm 64. Foolishly I thought this is ideal. A 40 plus work week is a little too much for me and this would fill the gap from then to retirement...should that ever happen. It took a long time to find this job, now I guess it will take even longer to find a new one. The fact that I was told my work is excellent but the accountant said the payroll must be cut and my slot is the most likely is certainly of great comfort. What the heck now! Sterling recommendations do not pay the bills. I'm sure this would not have happened if the economy was better. Here's a funny. The product that the company wholesales is made in China because it is too expensive to manufacture here. I hope this is not a trend but I suspect that as China grows, wages will rise there and ...well, so much for imports from China.
This should be a fun week. How do you generate a positive attitude after you have been laid off?

2. Don't you just love it

How to generate a positive attitude after you have been laid off. Well I took the go on vacation answer. In my case the vacation had been planed and paid for prior to the job loss, thought about it and decided that I still needed the vacation, so I went and enjoyed and relaxed. To be honest the hardest job in the world is finding a job. Right now I am averaging 20 odd resumes a day in my endless search for a new job. So here is my prescription for a better "tude" go out, spend some time doing something fun to you, relax for a couple of days, then start the endless search again.

As to China, when they have tapped that country dry I am certain that they can find someplace else where they can pay slave wages. Lets see, South America, Africa, and other Asian nations. The big corporations have only just begun to abuse persons all over the world.

The economy is lousy right now, everywhere. Unless you're working in Terrorism there aren't many jobs left that aren't service industry.

But I won't - and, I suspect, neither will you. I don't know what you do - but you say a 'new company' found your skills desireable. Can you convert that into being a consultant for other new companies?

Count me in as another reinventor. It's unclear how many of the reinventing and/or in transition are out here, but their hunger to live the examined life and to find meaningful work is a theme I share and that I think society needs to tap.
