Advice Needed

I am applying for a state job. One of questions is have you ever been fired. I was fired about 7 years ago, before starting a seven year employment at my current job. Should I try to hide the fact that I was fired in the previous job, which resulted from a personality conflict with my supervisor?

Another question is have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor? I was convicted of drunk driving 28 years ago, since then, I've been a good boy. Should I also try to hide this?

There is a section in the application that you can supply comments if you answered yes, although I don't know how much that would help.

I'm concerned that by saying yes to those two questions above, I eliminate myself from consideration immediately, however if I do lie and they find out, I lose anyway.

1. I start a new job on Tuesday.

I have been temping since last January and quit my other job in November of 05 after working it for nearly 11 years. On the application I turned in last week I put down "do not contact" for that employer. They had a spot for an explanation and so I wrote that I had to file a labor contract grievance against the manager in regards to the job for which he was hired. I did have an excellent letter of reference from my immediate supervisor which matched other letters I had gotten from years ago. I was never asked about it in the interview.

My advice would be to be honest, considering it is a State job. Otherwise, you will always be wondering if or when they will find out. Then you would be fired for lying on your application. Honesty always makes life more simple. If it is a job worth having, it is a job worth telling the truth to get. And if you do get fired, then that is another job that you will either need to have an explanation for the firing or lie about that one also.
