Does anyone know when the "Opening Show of Olympics" starts???? |
|
I haven't seen anything about it here on DU and I know that we at least have a few "Figure Skating" fans?
When does it START? And what Network pitched the BIG DEAL for BUCKs to cover it?
Why don't we care about this anymore? I was here on DU through two Olympics and I've never seen so little coverage here about it.
Are we in "Malaise?"

I posted NBC's website that makes it very easy to find the coverage in your local area.

We watched it live on CBC. The prerecorded coverage on NBC begins, I believe, at 8 tonight.

I love the winter olympics. I'm way more into them than the summer olympics. I'm a huge bode miller and daren rahlves fan. I always root for the VT guys, mostly snowboarders, but 1 downhill skier, and I love the figure skating. The opening ceremonies are on NBC at 8.

15. I've always loved the Olympics as a Spirit of HOPE for Humanity |
|
and I really have to say (shame on me) I don't like "professional sports" and avoid it whenever I can.
But...the OLYMPICS has always captured my spirit.
I know that the Figure Skating rules have pretty much been trashed and done away with and that "professionals" can now participate...but I have hope.
What I MISS is that Curmudgeon Dick Button who really "tells it like it is...with rules and regulations...but ABC only does the Nationals and Button is considered "TOO OLD" for the 18-29 year old MARKETED GROUP that the Advertisers Cultivate... Still...I long for the "old rules" even though I like many of the new innovations for Creative Weighting as opposed to Skating in circles.
Anyway...just a rant...I wish the "Old and New" could come together in a way that doesn't through out the "old rules" as garbage..
We have a Chimpanzee as P-Resident...kind of says what "NEW RULES" mean when they are practiced ...doesn't it? Or, maybe not...who knows.

I think I heard that Dick Button is on loan to NBC. I could be wrong. I generally watch CBC. Much better coverage.
And here's to the Vermont girls: Go Kelly, Go Lindsay, Go Hannah.

...indeed. In fact, I have video's of Ben Agosto from waaaay back when. My kids skated for a long time.
We are PLEASED to see Ben at the Olympics and we will be pulling for him and his partner Tanith. We will be glued to the TV, it's just too bad that they only show selected segments. The best coverage was in Europe where we saw everything, every skater, every skier.
We were at most of the big skating events of 2002....wish we were in Italy this time.
Cheers

...it was great. I was never really a big Sarah Hughes fan, but Sarah really did out skate Michelle. I was amazed!
The bonus for us...we sat right behind the Hughes family when she won the gold, except for her parents....like many "skating parents" they were outside the arena, too tense to watch their daughter skate.
We'll see how Kwan does this time, I hope well as I am NOT a Sasha Cohen fan at all. Some skaters are very nice, some are a real nasty piece of work.
Cheers

25. Thanks for sharing your experience |

I agree that Hughes probably won...but Michelle is such a beautiful skater with a history..it was a bitter moment for me.
I've grown to like Sasha Cohen...after watching her in the Nationals this year..without Michelle at her back. She had a beautiful program and she didn't "fall down" which has always been Sasha's problem under pressure.(I've NOT been a fan of her's in the past..maybe she's matured.)
I wish her well at the Olympics...I don't know if Michelle has the OOMPH for it...but I still love her......

Kwan won't win, she's too old. I know that sounds terrible, but her hips and knees are shot. Too many triples, the landings are too hard. We were told that for every jump my kids landed, it was as if 200+ pounds were landing on the landing foot. After years of that type of physical abuse her body is giving out. Also the new judging criteria do not favor Kwan. After saying all of this...I hope I'm competely wrong.
I would love to see Michelle win but....I don't see it happening.
Sasha...I don't care for her style of skating but she is very talented. She is not a very nice person, I could say more but I'll stop here.
After being involved in the skating world for 15+ years the shine is somewhat rubbed off in some areas. My son competed against Evan Lysacek (sp) when they were little guys.
When I think of beautiful skaters, Kristi, Dorothy, and Peggy come to mind. Kristi was the last of the skaters to skate patch and it shows. Patch skaters are more graceful and precise, IMO.
Tomorrow night starts Pairs Short, I can't wait to see it.
Cheers
