Why are some drug stores putting condoms under lock and key? |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 07:43 PM by NVMojo
I just noticed that the condoms are locked up at our local Smith's Pharmacy chain. Then I came across this on: http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2006/04/cvs-obstructs-condom-use.htmlwhat's peculiar about this in my city is that we have legal brothels in our downtown that require the prostitutes (by law) to use condoms when they have paid sex with clients. So what the feck is up?

1. The Cub Foods in Beloit, WI did the same thing a decade ago -- |
|
they said it was for theft prevention. They kept condoms, pregnancy tests, yeast-infection meds and other items under lock and key, because people would swipe them, either for the thrill or because they were embarassed about the need in the first place.

26. Shoplifting was my guess |
|
I would think teenagers would steal them because they were too embarrassed to go through the register with them.
Easier to steal them.

|
yet do nothing about unprotected sex and prevention of unwanted births or diseases. The same fundies who think the rapture is coming. The same fundies who are probably popping viagra left and right.

People will instead do without (but have sex anyway) because they are too embarrassed to ask for them. And, some asshole behind the counter will give the purchaser a lecture.

one grocery store for sure keeps them locked up at night. It can be unlocked by the manager. It's mostly do to theft at night.
edited to add, along with the condoms the nicotine patchs and gum, diabetic testers are also locked up in the same cabinet with glass doors.

7. So we can become like Romania |
|
Where birth control, abortion, all of it was illegal. Forced pregnancies resulted in thousands of children dumped in horrific orphanages where they were treated worse than animals. Many of the children were so badly damaged they were unadoptable by Westerners.

13. I have a better question. |
|
Why do condoms come in Large and Xtra Large? Where's Small and Medium? :dunce:
Don't believe me? Look at them next time. Better still, just ask the pharmacist for "size small, please."

18. Truth Is, Fundies Fear Condoms as Anti-Gunners Fear Guns: |
|
You know, both have to be kept under lock and key lest they come alive in the dead of night, escaping captivity, unwrapping themselves (or loading themselves), then running amok and assaulting the innocent -- doubtless while driving SUVs and/or accompanied by Pit Bulls.

23. Or they just don't want the expense of paying! |
|
The clientele at the store where I worked tended to be middle-aged and up, and condoms got shoplifted all the time. Maybe the middle-aged people were all uptight?
(Statistically speaking, the average shoplifter is a white middle-aged woman.)

21. They are *very* prone to "shrink" (shoplifting) |
|
I worked at a Walgreens, and condoms were shoplifted all the time. People would just open the box, take the condoms out and stash them, and toss the empty box behind the maxi pads on the other side of the aisle. Happened at least once or twice a day. The only thing more often shoplifted than condoms were pregnancy tests--again, by opening the box, removing contents, and tossing the empty box behind the maxi pads.

Seems to me that it wouldn't have to be a fundie thing or even an anti-abortion/pro-life thing. I would say that condoms are a readily and fairly easily shoplifted item. The stores are just trying to keep them from being stolen.
