Despite freezing temperatures and windy conditions, members of SEIU Local #1 in St. Louis rallied downtown and in the suburb of Clayton to encourage janitorial workers to unionize. Rob Weiter has more on the rally.
Kevin Oliver, a representative of SEIU Local #1 explains:
Oliver says that the Local has about 6000 to 7000 members and currently negotiating next years contracts with Union shops. He said that, although most janitorial and cleaning services in the Saint Louis area are Union shops, many smaller ones are not, and that the Local is actively seeking to get those employees to Unionize so that all workers can negotiate better wages, benefits and working conditions.
For Worker's Independent News, I'm Rob Weiter.
