Overall, there is a massive discrepancy when it comes to race. White Americans are looking at an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent. Not great, but not the worst. On the flipside, black Americans are staring down an unemployment rate of 15.8 percent – a full six percent above the national average and more than double the 7 percent unemployment rate of 2000. It looked like the tides were changing in March of 2010 when the black unemployment rate dropped from 16.5 percent to 15.8 percent, but while job prospects slightly improved for other races, black Americans have been stuck.
