Working America members to promote King legacy Monday in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS - Members of Working America will gather signatures in downtown Minneapolis Monday on petitions for good jobs, secure retirement, quality public education and the rights of workers to advocate for themselves on the job.

The event is part of activities planned nationwide to honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., killed April 4, 1968, while supporting striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tenn.

Working America, a community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, has 3 million members nationwide, including several hundred thousand in Minnesota. The petition signing will run from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Monday at Peavey Plaza, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis.

The public will also have the opportunity to have their picture taken with the message: “I Am Working America,” organizers said.

“Working people are no longer willing to sit back while their rights and their ability to support their families are attacked by politicians and their rich corporate donors,” said Karen Nussbaum, executive director of Working America. “Dr. King’s example is a powerful one. If we stand together, we can defeat these policies and build the future we and our children deserve.”
