15 August 2011  |  Media release

Las Vegas, NV - A keynote address to over 3,000 delegates by United Steelworkers International President Leo W. Gerard opened the USW's International Convention today in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Steelworkers local union leaders from across North America are attending the four-day convention along with the USW's top international officers and executive board members. The convention's theme is Stand Up, Fight Back.

The 3,000-plus delegates are local union leaders who come from a wide range of industries including metals, mining, rubber, paper and forestry, oil refining, chemicals, plus education, office, technical and service workers in health care, security, hotels and municipal governments and agencies.

Convention delegates will determine the USW's policies and future direction and will engage in discussions on international affairs and the union's work around the world. Those discussions will include the USW's deepening alliances with labour and human rights groups across the globe, such Los Mineros, the major mining and steel union in Mexico, and United Kingdom-based Unite the Union, the USW's partner in Workers Uniting, the first transatlantic labor union.
