And this: October 11, 1873 - The Miners’ National Association formed in Youngstown, Ohio. Its president was Irish-born John Siney, who sought to unite all miners, regardless of skill or ethnic background. The Miners’ National Association set the goal of organizing all American mineworkers into one industrial union. This philosophy of inclusion was echoed in the Knights of Labor, the hugely successful labor organization formed in 1869, and later by the United Mine Workers, founded in 1890.
