Poll question: Te molestaria? |

Would it bothered you if a thread in a discussion board other than the Latino/Hispanic forum was locked just for being written in Spanish? http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2417988

I've seen threads in other languages such as German and French, which always get a few responses from those that speak German and French, and my thought is always, gee, I wish I could read and write German or French, but I never felt that the thread should be locked down because of it.

7. If its a whole thread in spanish, it should be in our section. |
|
This thread, the person is only asking what a few words mean in German.

I've never started any threads in Spanish in GD or the Lounge, but I have had Spanish conversations in GD, specifically with Swamp Rat in a GD thread, and I would have been pissed if my posts would have been deleted or the thread locked because of it.
I really don't believe this is even an issue because I haven't seen any threads in Spanish in GD.

3. I don't think other languages should be spoken or written |

in the presence of those who may not speak it. I was always careful when I was with Latina friends in anglo company not to speak Spanish in front of them. If it was a case of the friend not speaking English, I always translated for those present who didn't speak Spanish.
When I lived in Chile, most of the kids I grew up with were bilingual and the language we spoke was a mixture of both, something that was very confusing for the new kid from America or the Chilean kid who hadn't learned English. We always made a point of talking in only one language if a person was present didn't speak both. We would use their language for conversation in their presence.
In the case of DU if it was only a few words I would be upset. If the whole post was in a foreign language in one of the big forums like GD, I would probably expect it to be locked if a translation wasn't made available in the same post.

I normally won't speak Spanish specially in the workplace unless I am spoken in Spanish. If someone makes a comment I translate it to English as a matter of consideration to others.
I found it odd (and a bit rude) that someone posted the thread in Spanish knowing that a Latino forum is available (Speaking of the thread in reference). I just don't understand why was it locked and not moved just the same way other stuff are moved to the general discussion board. I though it was rude on both sides, for posting in a predominantly English speaking audience and for locking the thread. That was a sorry ass excuse to lock a thread if you ask me. But of course, this is their site and I guess they can do "lo que le salga del culo con esta puta pagina". :argh:

If in a small group or in a situation where I am trying to barter with someone, I will use their language whenever possible. In the case of DU where there are THOUSANDS of threads in English, there is no reason to lock a few threads where an alternative language is spoken.

that if you are in mixed company it is always polite to speak in the most common language, which in this case is English. I don't like to speak Spanish if I know a number of people present don't understand me. (Unless of course, I don't like them;-) )

9. Why lock it instead of asking for a translation or for inclusion? |
|
Maybe the mods were too busy or something? Spanish is beautiful and I always love reading it, even when I struggle.
