New group proposal.. Hiv/Aids support Bear with my subject line and please read... |
|
Of all the groups here on DU I couldn't think of a more compassionate group of people who are sensitive to a medical condition.... I didn't want to propose this in GD, for instance, cause I don't want to broadcast my condition to almost a hundred thousand people...
If you would indulge me for a moment...
For two years I -knew- I had HIV and was so scared of it I never went to the doctor. I was still under the impression that it was death. That once meds started you would puke all the time and emaciate. I honestly didn't think that I would live past 40...
That was 4 years ago.. On my first visit to my virologist she told me medicine had come along so much that I 'would live my natural life expectancy'. I started to cry.. Turns out my bloodwork is awesome and she estimates I am years away from meds..
I figure out of almost 100,000 people on here there is at LEAST ONE other who was in the same situation that I was.. And if that person could be told 'dont worry, goto the doctor, its not that bad' it would make the group valid and helpful..
As far as mission statement?
inform people its not a death sentence.. share news of discoveries.. uhm.. give emotional support for bad blood levels..give kicks when people beat their bad blood levels and they rise...I guess all in all, just create a supportive environment for the scared, the healthy, and the suffering..
If anyone else can help out with that, by all means.. Ive only been on here a while and never would have even thought about suggesting a group...
And thanks for your time...

I'm so sorry you have this to deal with, but thrilled to hear your latest results. Ashamedly, I don't know enough about the disease to help with a mission statement although I was convinced during a period in my 30's that I was infected. Perhaps you could borrow a bit of this groups mission statement just to get you started or use it as a guideline.
Rest assured of my support for your group, you and fellow sufferer's of all conditions.:pals:

I would borrow the brief mission statement from this group. And believe me, you are not alone here. Take care.

I cant edit my OP cause time ran out, so Ill adopt this groups mission statement to qualify
The mission of the HIV/AIDS Support Group is to share information and provide support for HIV/AIDS patients, survivors, and their families, and to engage in activism that will promote research and improve the care that HIV/AIDS patients receive.
And thanks for helping..

Nothing helps those afflicted with a serious illness more than the knowledge they're not alone. Providing another channel for people to find help and support is a very worthwhile thing to do.
