| 5. Brief update. I had my first chemo treatment yesterday and so far |
|
so good. I haven't experienced any of the bad effects yet. I'm told it takes a couple of days. I felt good enough today to drive 45 miles to my mother's home, take her to her oncologist (she is stage 4 with it spread to her hip bone but is responding VERY well to the anti-hormone Femara). She was diagnosed almost two years ago and so far so good. Trip back home and I was ready for the couch. But in all honesty I would have been ready for the couch, chemo or not.
I had my mastectomy back in July but due to a series of doctors, new doctors, referrals, lost test results and such I am now just getting around to the chemo. The upside - I got to keep my hair a little longer than first thought. The down side, I would have had it all behind me if I had just gone ahead with the chemo. I'm thinking it will be easier to wear a wig in the winter than in the middle of summer? Somebody agree with me on this one, please!
Had one doc telling me six months, another doc said no chemo at all and a third doc said for me to take the Oncotype DX test to determine the likelihood of a recurrence of cancer thus maybe eliminating the need for chemo. Onco type should have taken less than two weeks ended up taking over five weeks. I decided to quit waiting and signed up for the chemo and started yesterday. Would you believe that not two hours ago the doc who advised the Onco called to say I am in the low range (8%) yeah! but thought to "be safe" to go ahead with the chemo. So I am scheduled for chemo every three weeks for 12 weeks. Not so bad after all. The way I have it figured up I'll get my third treatment two weeks before Christmas (so I should feel hunky dory for the holidays and then get my last treatment on Dec. 28th. Pretty good way to usher in the New Year.
So, I am fine. Still wondering what all is ahead but know I can take it.
Hope everyone is doing well, also. Together we can get through this and one day may they find a cure so that our ranks will get thinner and thinner from new diagnoses.

nothing I got is green but I think that is a pretty good sign at this stage of the game. It will look nice with my warm brown eyes.
Thanks so much for the offer.

winter is a heck of a lot better for wig wearing. I did chemo during the winter and when Spring came the wig had to go no matter how fuzzy pated I was. I also did the every 3 weeks rounds. It gives you a little time to rest between treatments.
