Special correspondent John Tulenko reports from Indiana, where a voucher program allows families to choose religious schools, charter schools and public schools in neighboring districts for their children as part of an effort to provide more options when graduation rates are low. (Transcript)

This story was in Anderson, Indiana, and regarding constitutional issues: "Indiana courts have so far ruled the program constitutional, because parents, not the state, choose where to spend their voucher." The story featured both Indiana superintendent Tony Bennett (not the singer), who has advocated the Republican-led voucher program, and Democratic state representative Ed Delaney, who criticized vouchers.

I agree, as I tend to be pro-choice on pretty much everything (I like options).

the obvious solution to the inequality and social pathologies created in our society by "free market capitalism" is to bring free market capitalism directly into public schools. :evilgrin:

3. I really hope that was sarcasm. America doesn't have

"free market capitalism" and has not for decades. Overturning the Sherman Anti-trust Act and Glass-Steagal tilted the paying field to monopolies. Any time there is "for-profit" anything, the emphasis is going to be on making a profit. This clip didn't tell us if the Teachers are in the Union (which allows them to collectively bargain for a living wage). Wait, I forgot, Governor Mitch Daniels first official act was to require all public employees to quit the Union.

So, the sky is the limit for profits in these for-profit schools. Amazingly, the GOP says that wall St. must pay out million dollar bonuses to be able to retain the "best and brightest" CEO's (oddly the CEO's who destroy their companies make some of the largest bonuses and golden parachute money). Of course, the CEO's that outsource American jobs to greatly increase profits do great also. So, how will schools who underpay their Teachers, attract quality educators?

I guess in a destroyed, dog-eat-dog, capitalist society the teachers will have to do the best they can to support their families. Of course, the owners of these for-profit schools, will increasingly demand higher and higher profits. It is how our current system works. I foresee (and there already are) huge, chain, for-profit schools that provide their owners with big profits at the expense of education. Currently, profit is not as important. Getting established and accepted is what is important. After that, let the profits roll.
