1. What struck me about that sketch is that it wasn't much of a spoof.

The GOP candidates have become such a joke that they're difficult to spoof. The are walking caricatures. All SNL did was recreate Perry's meltdown, then added some typically un-funny reactions from the other characters. That sketch was almost as painful to watch as the actual debate.

2. I see your point. . .

. . . and I agree that it wasn't the funniest thing they've ever done. But it's the same method they uses when lampooning Sarah Palin, and it is far more destructive to the politician's image than just making everything up. A lot of people who watch SNL don't read papers or watch traditional news media outlets, so that's the closest they'll ever get to seeing exactly how stupid Rick Perry is.
