Ok on Britney Speas and 51-50 holds |
|
I am amazed at the lack of empathy. Let me explain, in layman terms, what a 51-50 is. When the authorities believe that you are a danger to self, or others they can forcibly commit you for seventy two hours to a mental health facility. Truth be told, most authorities hate doing these things because the paperwork is nasty
The fact that she was been committed TWICE in less than thirty days, on a 51-50 hold, tells me she is sick
The reaction to this also tells me that as usual people have very little empathy not only to stars, but to mental health patients. Britney is sick... what exactly ails her, I don't know. And for god sake, I do hope she gets the MENTAL HEALTH CARE she needs... but the snide remarks about any of you NOT having any sympathy for her tells me more about you, than it tells me about Mrs Spears (or the bread and circuses that goes with it).
As I said, most police departments, EMS services and ER docs hate the paperwork... and the other big secret is that beds are a rare commodity (yes this started with Reagan)... but her tragedy (and it is a tragedy) and your reaction to it, tells me that as usual people truly do not understand that mental illness is real. In her case, it is very real. So a little sympathy for her might be a good idea.
Oh and the paparazzi.. I have nothing good to say about them. I never have, and I fear never will.

4. Well that is where the news of her 51-50 most likely properly belongs |
|
unless she was driven to this state by something in the water (in which case it becomes a public health concern, and yes it has happened, some heavy metals do that)
But that is no the point MENTAL HEALTH is a real issue... as well as MENTAL ILLNESS

7. That was simply an all-round good post. |
|
Honest. Truthful. Not melodramatic; not using overblown analagies, and more importantly, it was about what is the right thing to do. It addressed major problems people have with empathy, and people telling themselves that the mentally ill aren't really ill.
I agree with you. Completely.
Furthermore, that was simply a good post. No bullshit. I'm pretty much blown away, as you can tell.

14. I know the feeling. I've spoken to quite a few people who feel the same way. |
|
There are days when people seem to think mental illness is either a ploy to get attention, or a sign someone is evil or criminal.
(ie - Someone is depressed. "They should snap out of it" Someone does something bad "they must be a psychopath", as if no normal person ever did anything wrong.)
Sure, sometimes a rich person will make a complaint that will be stupid; about something that all of us put up with normally.
And sometimes they will run into trouble where money doesn't help. Doesn't even mean anything. They are just as human as the rest of us. Horrible things that happen to them are just as horrible as those things when they happen to us.
But again, you are right on the subject of mental illness.

9. Joe and Jane American get tased, handcuffed, and carted off. |
|
I'm not hostile to Britney, but the way in which she is handled by authorities is special. Unfortunately, most Americans see only the harsh business end of such interactions. Meaning, they get thrown down, beaten around, and generally treated like criminals.
I worry about all those people with mental problems - the ones who don't get star treatment, who don't have the money to have the best treatment, who might be killed because they're off their meds today.
I try not to pay any attention to Britney or any of the other stars with problems. There are real problems to worry about, and those are the ones I address.

10. Ok perhaps I missed this |
|
but the first 51-50 she was carted off, TIED DOWN... not that I can blame the medics for that.
So she didn't get tasered, they just used the restraints in the rig and got her out in a very uncomfortable position... hands tied down to the side of the gurney is all but nice, as well as feet restrained.
The second time around she willingly got onto the gurney... care to bet that happened because she got restrained by some burly firefighters the first time around?
Been there, done that with mental patients, and after the first fight they loose, they become somewhat compliant...

Right now I think they only have a T-con. That her father and her attorney are the reps and not the county suggest they filed for probate conservatorship even though they started with an LPS, so her conservators need not prove organic mental illness. They only need to prove she cannot provide for her own food clothing and shelter

If they want to put this on an entertainment news show then have at it, but it should not be a top news story and it always is.
The girl is fucked up in the head and I really don't think think she'll live more than another year or two. Just keep it off the national news.

as I said, use this opportunity on bread and circuses to EDUCATE yourself on mental health issues
And if she gets the RIGHT treatment, she will be around for a long time. If she does not... well... she could even end up in the streets with the legions of OTHER mentally ill people who apparently don't count either.
And yes it belongs in E-Tonight, but that is not what amazes me about this... but the callous reactions to it

Now get her off my television and out of the damn news cycle. I'm tired of having to listen to all the yammering about a drugged up, freaked out former pop princess. After the past few years of wall to wall Britney coverage I think it is a natural reaction to wish that she goes away for a long while.

People who have family members who are mentally ill understand and empathize with Britney Spear's condition. I had to watch my sister go from a vibrant, talented, intelligent young woman to a shell of her former self, after 21 years with schitzophrenia. She lost her fight last June, after prolonged physical problems, some of which were brought on by her anti-psychotic meds.
People who don't at least sympathize with this young woman's problems are just heartless. I've never been a fan of her music, but I can at least care that she gets the treatment she needs.
