But I had the day off last Thursday, and took the SMART (the suburban Detroit transit system) bus into the city for a Tigers game. I listened to music on my iPod, read a magazine and arrived completely unstressed. Then I walked around downtown, taking in the RiverWalk and stopping in Greektown for dinner. Total bliss. I'm really beginning to hate the suburban sprawl that I live in, where even crossing the perpetually-packed road to get to a store is like that old video game "Frogger."

I do miss the walkability of my hometown (Bristol, England) sometimes. Like most European cities, 99% of the roads (other than motorways, equivalent to interstates here) have sidewalks and probably 90% of those have them on both sides of the road.
