| Any good finds this weekend? |
|
I bought a bunch of silverplate (coffee pot, pitcher, platters) from an older lady who told me it was the last remnants of her father's German sanitorium from the WWI era where people used to go for the "grape cure" - a quack medicine program meant to cure cancer and other diseases. The sanitorium was called Waldpark and the father's name was Dr. Max Bermann. A few pieces have his name on them and a couple have "Waldpark" on them. Haven't found out much more, but it was kind of an interesting find.

I've been looking for a very large old dining room table. I found one with a lovely finish, but it needs some repair done so I am weighing whether or not to get it. It's empire style and seats eight PLUS has three leaves. The flaw is this: one of the struts that goes from the center support over to a leg is missing. It is curved and milled, so it would be difficult to replace. The price is great: only $125. I wouldn't even mind putting a non-matching strut in place to make it sturdy temporarily until a match could be found.

| 3. Some cool old items on commission: |

Some friends gave me several old farm tools to sell for them, as well as a vintage Polaroid camera and antique radio. I have no idea yet what they will go for - maybe not much, and maybe we'll be surprised!

| 6. Before we went to dinner tonight I stopped at the thrift and picked |

up a satin glass brides basket and a piece of Beleek. Ha! couldn't let it go even for one weekend. Yup, I'm hooked alright.

Our local thrift shop has turned into a place where the employees skim off the good stuff and leave the used Tupperware containers for the rest of us.

| 10. Most of our thrifts have gone that way as well, this is a new one where |
|
depending on when you go and who is putting the stuff out you can get lucky. A few weeks ago I bought a Hawaiian maiden chalk lamp in pretty good condition. Timing seems to be key with this shop.

| 9. I had a kind of funny find... |
|
I needed a couple of computer power cords, so I headed to my nearby Goodwill. They have a big bin of them and at a buck each it's a great price.
As I was rooting through the bin, trying to untangle a couple of cords, I saw what looked like a brand-new pair of headphones. I threw them in my cart, along with the cords I eventually untangled. The clerk charged me seventy-nine cents for them.
I looked at the headphones when I brought them home, and they're new, in-the-box Sharper Image noise cancelling headphones. I looked it up and they retail for $75. They work great and I'm keeping these babies...my iPod never sounded so good.

My own neighborhood is having a community sale this weekend with a map to forty different sales. I'll just get the Radio Flyer wagon and walk the blocks. Ha! There may be nothing good at all, but it will be exercise, and fun.
What's coming up this weekend for you other addicts?
