| Top Ten Flea Market Treasures |
|
From the August Issue of Country Home, where dealers around the country list the ten most wanted items:
1. Hens on Nests
2. Signature Quilts
3. Boxed Games
4. Bakelite Kitchen Utensils
5. Brass Candlesticks
6. Political Buttons
7. Vintage Home Magazines
8. Notions
9. Antique Footstools
10. Copper Jewelry
A veddy interesting list, I think.

| 1. I have a friend who found 2 Cartier sterling silver baskets |
|
at a flea market for $5 apiece. Now I'm obsessive about checking little silver-colored baskets.

| 2. Sometimes the marks on things are so hard to see that I long |
|
ago bought a pair of "drugstore" eyeglasses that are far too powerful for my everyday use. I wear reading glasses @2.50 and bought(at a dollar store) a pair of 3.25. With a quick slip on of these glasses, the marks pop right out. If I wear them any more that a few seconds, everything is fuzzy but as a quick magnifier, they are great. No dealer at a yard sale or flea market wants to pull out a loupe. Do that and the price goes up.

| 3. That's a great idea! I carry a loupe in my bag, but as you said, |
|
the price goes up if you bring it out. The eyeglass idea is brilliant!

| 5. I've never thought of that. |

I was looking at an emerald ring. The dealer came waaay down. After I pulled out my loupe, the price went back up.

| 4. What does 'boxed games' refer to? What kind of games? |
|
And what kind of notions? I remember when I was little, I used to love going through the notions departments of stores, but now I can't even remember what kind of stuff was there.
Political buttons? Cool! When going through my mother's things, I found a small button for Ike. I can't remember what it said (but it wasn't 'I Like Ike').

Here's what it says:
"Old board and boxed games, such as the Merry Game of Old Maid and Pick-up Sticks, are popular colorful graphic appeal"
It shows board games unfolded and framed under glass for hanging as wall art, and playing cards done the same way.
Notions:
"All kinds of vintage sewing supplies, including buttons, beads, trim, lace and ribbon. Vintage lace and trims were usually made from natural fibers."
I've been buying up ziplock bags, shoe boxes, etc. of this stuff at estate sales for years. It's fun to sort through, I think. Lord almighty, I have thousands and thousands and thousands of buttons.

| 7. i wonder about the political buttons. lots of people have told me i should |
|
sell on ebay, but i never wanted to go through the hate spewing that they would most surely bring. but i wonder if i could sell some bagged lots of anti-bush buttons. i have made over 300 designs in the last 5 years, and do have a lot of leftovers. no doubt they are talking about older buttons, but maybe there are some forward thinking people out there. hmm.

| 8. Just my opinion, but I'd think the market for Bush buttons wouldn't |
|
be so wonderful right now. I'd probably put them in storage for the time being. I've had good luck selling older buttons. If you put them on and describe them without making a political statement you won't get too many crackpots coming out of the woodwork.
