I'm a little disappointed...
in DU. Only a couple of threads talking about Joe's speech. Guess he doesn't rate. It's all about Obama and Big Dog...whatthefuckever.

3. LOTS of Biden raves during the speech - I think they just moved by
fast because people were furiously posting.

And a couple of polls about Joe's speech - people really liked it.

4. I really thing he was held back
he can attack alot harder than that.

I was dissapointed b/c I wanted hard core red meat Joe Biden.

It was a good speech and he could read the damn phone book and I'd be entranced.

But I expected to know what color of shorts McCain wore after Biden bit a hole in his pants tonight.

I didn't get that. Damn.

Loved Beau's little boy though.

5. I agree
He had input, definitely, but it wasn't all Joe, and it was too scripted. Plus, at first his timing was off. It got better as he went along. It was a good hit, but it wasn't out of the ball park. Personally, I think he was a little nervous at first.

However, the part about the kitchen table, man oh man, I've had those conversations.

JMHO,

Susan

22. Yeah, he was nervous I think....
he's use to being in more quaint settings, and the rest of these people have had a TON of practice...but joe will settle in and the debate will be great because they can't script that.

I thought these photos were telling of the kind of day Joe had, especially the last one;

I think the dude with the brown hair is Joe's aid/assistant/speech writer.

6. Thank you for saying it.

This was not Joe's best speech.

Chuck Todd picked up on it too, and he is getting alot of crap out there in gdp for saying it.
Guess we just know Joe, and most people are just finding out who he is.

7. I was just coming here to say that about Chuck Todd
For those who aren't as familiar with Biden as we are, the speech was great. Chuck Todd said it was a joint effort between campaign speech writers and one Biden speech writer. The line, "That's not change, that's more of the same" did not sound like Joe and someone in the Biden speech thread commented on it too.

Overall, everyone seemed to love him and that warms the heart. Hopefully, the campaign will back off a bit, so they can get the very best of Joe, which can't be scripted.

12. I thought Biden's was good, but not the best of the night
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 01:29 AM by chiefofclarinet
Biden's speech was rather good. He did a nice job of attacking McCain civilly, but I wanted more of it. He really outlined his and Obama's platform, which was positive. I was hoping for a "That's not change. That's the same." line sounded too Obama-esque for Biden. It's not a bad line, it just works better for Obama. I loved the effect of his family background on the speech. It gave him a humanness that we can latch onto, which is going to be needed for the election. (That social appeal is as important as the appeal via issues.)

I thought Bill's speech was what was needed. He did a good job of bringing everyone together. He didn't attack McCain at all, which was a disappointment for me, but he made sure that he is 100% supporting Obama/Biden. I was also glad that he went back on almost everything he said in the primaries that was mistaken. But, the most important thing is that he is convinced that Obama is ready to commander-in-chief, just as Bill himself was 16 years ago.

Kerry's was AWESOME! Of course, his was only half shown on CNN, but what can you do about the Crummy "News" Noise? He went immediately on the attack. I loved the "Mission Accomplished" line; it really shows the shallowness of McCain's comments. I wanted McCain attacks, and got my fill from John's remarks. This man should have been president.

All and all, a great night for the Dems. Three home runs by the last Dem president, the should-be president of 2004, and the will-be vice president of 2008.

13. You are so right
"That's not change. That's more of the same" is NOT Biden and as such it stuck out. Some of the speech in the beginning was Biden, but the 2nd half sounded like Obama speech writers and those words don't fit Joe or his speaking style. It will probably take a while for them to get work it out. The campaign really needs to let Biden be Biden more. That's when he is the most effective.

It still was a stirring night.

21. This is my issue with Democrats, in general...
they are so afraid of speaking up, and looking like they are mean. WTF? The other side does it all the time, and they WIN!! HELLO DEMS?? I hate it that they act like soft-shell clams all of the time. What's to fear?? Hell, they might even drag a few million more people in if they give the other side hell. People want that now. Walking around on eggshells is probably the BIGGEST reason people think Dems are spineless, and can't protect this country. I realize that Obama doesn't want to get down in the dirt with the R's, but the time has come to CHANGE the way Democrats deal with the rightwing shitbags.

GROW SOME BALLS PEOPLE!!

9. America, meet JOE!
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 11:10 PM by NI4NI
Tonight was about AMERICA meeting JOE, and hearing about who he his!
I'm glad he didn't give an angry first impression to the nation.
NOW they know, and will be paying more attention to his credibility.
JOE will be taking plenty bigger bites out of McSame's ass for being associated with the administration long before November rolls around.
I'm bettin' on it!

14. I had a feeling that his 'fire in the belly' was going to be scripted too much
Should I watch it? Or forget it and not watch?

All I can say is, it's really never a good idea to follow a dancing bear. I think Joe is not used to being overly-scripted.

15. Oh yes, watch it! Watch it!
As Biden pros we knew that it wasn't his best, but definitely worth watching. The video was heart wrenching, Beau was charming, the kids were adorable, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Everyone loved him.

Oh, and his mother there was there too. You gotta watch it. I'm going to watch it again.

16. I think it's the best they could do on such short notice
The bar was set VERY high this week-

Michelle Obama gave (at least in IMHO) the most amazing/winning speech of the week.

To be fair, she has had years to think about what she would say, and Joe only got the nod a few days ago, so on the whole, good.

Now there's A LOT of pressure for Obama to deliver an amazing speech tomorrow.

Can you imagine having to top all these great speakers?!!

18. I just watched some of it again
and it really is very good, better the 2nd time around. I still hate the "That's not change. That's more of the same" though. It isn't Biden and it reminds me too much of McCain's lame "That's not change we can believe in". I can hear that wimpy, thin voice and see the ugly green screen. Now my skin's crawling!

20. Yeah, but, all of THOSE great speakers got to write their own speeches..
Just like Kerry did, which is why they were more impactful. I know joe contributed, because there was a lot in there, that he talked about on the campaign, but after watching it the 2nd time, you can tell when he goes into surrogate mode.

Honestly, they just need to let Joe be Joe. Read his speeches before, and omit anything they are not comfortable with, make suggestions on what to add, and just tell Joe to remember to stay on topic, if they are worried about what he might say.

When Obama walked out, Joe said something to Obama about his speech--kind of like--"I screw up the speech", and Obama said, "It was a great speech, It was a great speech".....as if to reassure Joe. I'm not sure exactly what Joe said, because I barely heard it, but,, in essence, Joe was worried that he didn't deliver. I wish I would have DVR'd it...

29. I noticed that, and frankly that is a Joe that I do not like to see.
I am so afraid they will put so much pressure on him to watch his words that they will diminish his confidence, which is why, though I am so proud of him, I was not sure I wanted him to be VP.
The Obama people can not have it both ways. They should have accepted Joe as Joe or if they are that worried about what he will say, then they should have selected someone else. Sorry, but that is how I feel about it.

32. I couldn't make out what they were saying
but something about it made me a bit uncomfortable. I see Joe as a powerful and influential statesman, and should be treated with extraordinary respect even if he is the VP nominee, not the presidential nominee.

I guess we all are a bit possessive and defensive when it comes to Joe.

WOW, what a heartfelt speech. I thought it was WONDERFUL. The intro by that hottie son Beau, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Michelle and Jill were practically bawling. I don't know how Joe kept his composure after that.

19. It looked like it was hard at the beginning for him
I was afraid he'd break up.

Watching Michelle was such a treat. She clearly was very moved. And of course Jill was beaming with pride for her husband. She looked like she'd burst any minute.

That crowd loved him and loved his beautiful family, just like we do. I'm emotionally exhausted.

23. Not the Joe we know, but...
For people not familiar with him, it was a great intro. I could tell he was uncomfortable at the beginning, but I think many would interpret that as emotion from the intro by his son.

What it did do is introduce a passionate, emotional, caring, family man with experience and knowledge about the screw ups of the current administration, and a comfort zone when it comes to national security, the pain of the middle class, foreign policy, and domestic policy as well. The "nervousness" might actually help him, as it again affirms him as a regular guy, a true rarity in DC politics.

The more of the same phrase was tough for him to get out. It's not his style at all, but again people not familiar with him may remember it, and think, "yeah...who needs more of the same?"

Our Joe is more comfortable, I think in a smaller venue, or on TV Q/A format. He'll have plenty of that in the coming weeks, where the wonderful mix of the common man and the wise, experienced, quick-witted, and honest politician we have come to love so much, will shine.

It was a good speech, I think, just not what those most familiar with his style expected.

Of course, I'd be happy to watch him read the morning paper...LOL.

31. Evidently Joe's speech writer
contributed, along with speech writers from the campaign, which could explain why some parts were classic Joe and other parts were strangely out of sync.

24. Not his best speech, but still, very good, considering the venue.
We forget that we know Joe so well & don't need an intro to him, like millions of Americans do. I did like his reference to people not being afraid when they hear those eight words, "The Vice President's office is on the phone." I only wonder if half of America got the meaning.

I missed Michelle's speech - must find it on YouTube. So far, I thought Schweitzer, Kucinich & Kerry were the best.
