2. Exactly - a change in pressure. |
|
And good point about the military.
Another thing that's interesting is that some people heard more than one boom, some people a pop and a boom, etc. Doesn't tell me anything, but it's curious that different people heard different things.
I'm guessing we'll never get a true response.
One of the people who responded said they'd experienced something similar in TX, and no official explanation was ever given.

:scared:
You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas.
You've just crossed over into... the Twilight Zone.

5. I've been kind of following this for a while. |
|
It will be interesting to see what transpires.
I was just listening to a show on it last night, too. There's concern that the activation of this might cause some black holes to form here. The argument against that is that there was one theory that the atomic bomb would ignite the entire atmosphere. The odds against it happening (remember - all theories) were low, so they went ahead with it. Duh.
Somebody also said that when they were inventing the locomotive, people (science?) believed that if you travelled faster than a horse, all the skin would melt off your body.
With this, though, we'd getting down into the quantum level, which is a pretty new area of science.
They had to postpone it once before - we'll see if it actually gets fired up this time.
Isn't it fascinating??

6. I'm not sure I think it's fascinating.... |
|
and, while I love science, I'm not sure why we need to know what this might prove. It seems a very costly experiment, and what if they are wrong...

7. Well, we'll find out on Wednesday. Maybe. |

Unless we're all vaporized :7 or they get another glitch.
There are many that feel as you do - it IS potentially a risky venture.

8. I was just reading some opposing scientist views... |

and they said that it may just be the last experiment we do....unsettling...that's how I feel about it.

9. Yeah, it's the unknown. |
|
All either side has at this point are theories.
And in all honesty, I think that even if there's not a tremendous accident, and it seems as though things are going along swimmingly, we may not really know the effects and repercussions for a long time to come.
But I just can't help myself - I'm excited about it. I think the world of quantum mechanics is our next frontier. I'm eager to dive in.

10. See, but what pisses me of about shit like this too is, that 9 billion |
|
dollars has been spent on this "experiment", 535 million from the US alone, and not ONE fucking cent trying to find a way to stop a hurricane, or even a tornado. These scientist are trying to figure out our universe, but fuck the planet and it's perils.
Really pisses me off.

11. That happens all the time in every area. |
|
The government can find billions to do what it wants, Venezuela has to come to the rescue to provide heating oil for some of our citizens in the North East.
The problem is, if we DIDN'T spend that money in WHATEVER area, it's not that it would instead be spent for the good of our people or the environment. The money only goes to things that furthers the government agenda.
And that pisses me off, too.
I'm less pissed about something like this, because it could further our understanding of science.

when people talk about this kind of thing, going to Mars, etc. I stop and think about how the money could be better spent, for things we need RIGHT NOW. How about helping the homeless, or the poor, or a million other things that effect the lives of the people on the planet NOW, not some 50-100 years from now.
I think the fate of this planet will happen with or without any intervention on the part of humans. I really do. I guess I just don't have a thirst to know WHY things are the way they are, scientifically speaking, I just take them at face value, and think; "that's amazing". (FWIW--I am not religious at all)
Heck, I'm 50, so what does this do for me, or anyone else for that matter, who won't even be around to see if there are any benefits from things like this. Are we just doing it for future generations?
I know, it sounds selfish, but really, my intention is, let's just take care of the issues we have RIGHT NOW. :-)

13. Very valid argument - and I'm in agreement. |
|
I'd much rather see that funding going to the environment or other really worthy areas of pursuit. The money NEVER seems to go to the poor, the homeless, the sick, those truly in need, regardless of who's in the WH.
But that isn't how our country and the world works, as much as we think it's wrong, and as much as we'd do differently if we were at the helm.
They must see some benefit from their investment in this, otherwise I don't thing they'd be participating.
