You know what, you guys? Someone posted a thread on who should be SOS (like we have any input :7). But as I was thinking through the possibilities, I kept coming back to the view that nobody would be as good as Joe in that position. No to Powell because of what he did for the Bush admin (which is kind of too bad, because other than that -- and if he endorsed Obama and became a Dem, he'd be good), Iffy about Clark, but only because he just isn't as tuned into all of the players as well as Joe is (plus, there's the mandatory waiting period, and it doesn't seem as though he and Obama are very sympatico these days.) No to Susan Rice -- brilliant, sharp, but just doesn't have the chops yet.

I can't think of anyone who would be so well suited as Joe. Sigh. And it's going to be a very crucial position.

What do you guys think?

Kerry would be wonderful, but you may have a point (although SOS would be pretty enticing). And I'm not sure he'd want to abandon his State with Kennedy's health an issue.

He's probably so torn. Pakistan was his area of expertise; yet his priority is getting Obama into the WH.

Maybe Obama will pick Richard Holbrooke.
Kerry would be excellent as well, but with Biden being gone, I kinda think we need Kerry in the SFRC.
Kerry is the only other one I trust 100% on foreign affairs.

8. Know what I think?

Obama and Joe said something in the 60 minutes interview, about what kind of role Biden would play, and I think they have an agreement, that Joe will play a much larger role in that function than any past VP. SO, that person will have to share Biden's mindset as well on foreign affairs. They might even be a.....more docile person, so that Joe has a bit more influence.

That's my thought. So, based on that, who would fit that bill?

I'm having a hard time thinking though, who the person could be. I bet it would bug Joe to see whoever it is flying off to talk to the head of a country when he knows he could probably do it better.

As for Richardson, I don't know how his rapport is with world leaders -- how he's viewed. Anybody?

I think Wes is tuned into all of the players, plus more. My concern relates to your point about 'sympatico;' I think there's a problem there, but its just my opinion.

He might be in this administration. I met him in Munich and he is a darn smart guy. He might be better DHS head?

That was my first thought when I read the OP. He's smart, seems honest, and has the background, but I don't know about face-to-face negotiations. He might fit better as the DHS head. I would think he would be honest about his comfort level with the SOS position.

I could easily imagine some sort of spot in the administration for him. He was one of the first to sound the alarm bells about the lying weasel regime. Seems fitting.

18. Richard Clarke is a very interesting character

He is not one to get off on the limelight, he is somewhat reserved, and very cool -- he could fill some role, for sure. Very pensive man.
