She's hanging out with Arne.
Education secretary and Jill Biden visit community college March 7, 6:59 PM · Add a Comment ShareThis Feed Arne Duncan, Education Secretary It may be telling that the first institution of higher education to be visited by the new Secretary of the Education on Friday, March 6, was a community college. Arne Duncan arrived on the campus of Miami-Dade College with Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, who is herself a community college professor in Virginia. Community colleges have become increasingly important institutions of higher education, and they shoulder a number of burdens. In many ways, however, those burdens are part of what makes a good community college invaluable to our society and an exciting place to study and work. Those concerned about the challenges facing community colleges could find an important ally in Jill Biden, and it may be that Duncan’s presence at a community college is a signal that President Obama himself will be leading the way toward re-valuing this uniquely American institution. $31 billion of the $100 billion tagged for higher education from the stimulus bill recently signed by the President will help community colleges provide crucial academic services. Enrollments have risen as the economic avalanche precipitated by irresponsible financial dealings swallow people’s jobs and businesses. That enrollment should increase even more as, according to Duncan, “We want to drive up the high school graduation rate.”
