FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Vice President Biden told soldiers returning Wednesday from a 15-month combat tour in Iraq that the stress troops and their families feel from multiple, lengthy combat deployments is largely invisible to most Americans.
"In a sense, we're more a military at war than a nation a war," Biden said to the Army's 18th Airborne Corps.
As a senator from Delaware, the Democrat was critical of the way former president George W. Bush waged the war in Iraq, which started in March 2003. He also opposed Bush's strategy in 2007 to increase troop levels in Iraq. Biden's son, Beau, is currently serving in Iraq as an Army lawyer. Beau Biden is also the Democratic attorney general of Delaware.
Many Americans know little of the military's sacrifices, Biden said. "A 15-month deployment — to most Americans that's a lifetime," he said. Soldiers can miss their child's first step or two birthdays.
