Here, guys -- this is nice...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=6394461&mesg_id=6395306

This morning I was lying in bed and on Stephanie Miller they cut in and said that Joe was giving a statement on Teddy's passing. It turns out that he was speaking about energy (he'd apparently already spoken of Kennedy) but he sounded AWFUL -- I was a little alarmed. So I just transferred my carcass to the sofa in front of the TV, and MSNBC showed just a short snippet of Joe's remarks. :( Now I understand why Joe sounded like that - I guess they asked him about it at gathering where he was speaking on energy (which, by the way, I really liked what he was saying).

I read in some article that while Obama is pretty scripted, Joe is off the cuff (as we well know -- that's a big part of why we love him so much!) and that brought both joy and apprehension to the White House. :)

I'm so sorry Kennedy didn't live to see us FINALLY make some moves in health care. On the Stephanie Miller show they were playing clips of him speaking on health care since the 1970's!

I also heard someone say his son said Teddy first became passionate about it when his own son had cancer and had that amputation. He'd spend the days and nights at the hospital and met several families who were in similar situations -- except that they didn't have the Kennedy $$$. He couldn't imagine not being able to take care of one's children if one didn't have the money. He (Kennedy's son) also said Kennedy had paid medical bills for many people -- his dad never mentioned it, the people he helped would tell him.

2. I was online last night
and my daughter-in-law popped in gmail chat about 10 pm and told me he had died. She's in Boston and said Mass will be a mess today. Even though I knew it was coming, it was still a shock. This morning I remembered that his sister just passed away as well. An era is passing as well and I think it is hitting a lot of us on many levels.

3. There have been a couple of poignant cartoons posted here today --
evoking more emotion than so many words can. CNN is showing parts of an HBO special that will air tonight and it's really really good -- old footage, photos, etc. If you see this, it's still going - so check it out.

4. Oh the cartoons were devastating
Evoked far more emotions than any words.

I missed the CNN segment, but I do have HBO, so I'll watch the special tonight. Thanks.

5. I just tried to record it but it wasn't showing on the listings yet -- maybe it'll
show up later. (Of course, I could just watch it but my brother and sister-in-law wouldn't be the least bit interested :grr:)

And don't forget that Tweety is going to have that special tomorrow night -- not sure if it's on MSNBC or NBC, but it'll be TRIPLE heart-wrenching now, since they're all gone :( (It's about The Kennedy Brothers)

6. The MSNBC special will be on after Ed's show
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 03:45 PM by PatSeg
and will be played again later on.

It's too soon for the special to show up on HBO I think. I'll have to keep checking to see if they show any promos.

10. I was actually able to see and record the Tweety piece. Did you see it? I thought-
it was pretty good.

I accidentally caught part of the HBO thing on CNN around 4pm or so.

Just went looking for info and saw an announcement it'd be on CNN when I saw it :eyes: lotsa help that is. It's kind of an interesting article. I hope they play it again -- I would imagine they will, don''t you??

12. Oh I'm sure they'll play it again
If not during the week, then on the weekend for sure.

I did get to see Matthew's special. It was good, but I've watched so many Kennedy documentaries, I think I reached saturation level a while back. I don't think there has ever been a family that has captured our imagination and curiosity like the Kennedys and I'm quite certain there never will be. Following their lives has been like an endless epic novel. With all the scandals, we are quick to forgive and still love them.

9. Biden's remarks were totally unscripted today, and that's what made them so touching.
I bet there wasn't a dry eye in the audience where he was speaking.

11. I was surprised at some of the non-dry eyes here at DU on that thread!
We always knew it. I'm so sorry for Joe and Chris Dodd -- I feel like I KNOW them.

13. I noticed today that many people on TV were clearly
broken up by his death. I heard a lot of voices breaking and people fighting back tears, except for that ass Chuck Todd who sounded like an indifferent robot. His interview of the author of Ted Kennedy's biography was flat out rude. What a jerk.

15. That he is
He outdid himself yesterday. He looked like someone who had just been dressed down by the boss and then had to go on air and pretend to be civil. Maybe he was just nervous carrying a show by himself, but I would have had sympathy for him if that was the way it appeared.

16. He's probably still pouting about this:

By the way, I was blown away by Jeremy Scahill -- he OWNS that subject!

17. I think that encounter
may be part of why he was such a dick yesterday. It is possible that he DID get taken aside at MSNBC and was still "pouting".

18. I didn't see him yesterday but lots of people were mentioning his 'tude.
Even if MSNBC didn't take him aside, he was probably humiliated -- he obviously didn't know as much as he thought it did. Plus, he's used to being asked questions, giving his oh-so-sage response, then the anchor just accepting it and moving on to the next question. I hope it knocked him down a peg so he'll be less opinionated and maybe just a little humble. Nah, probably never happen.

19. I started a thread yesterday
because I was so appalled by his demeanor on TV. A computer could have shown more emotion than he did and he was flat out rude.

Back when he did analysis, I rather liked him, but since he's become a WH correspondent, he comes across as a real jerk. He asks terrible questions and has so much attitude, it is uncomfortable to listen to him.

20. Perfect: uncomfortable to listen to him. When I've seen him at WH press
briefings where he was just so rude to Gibbs -- and I THINK I've seen him show disrespect to Obama, too.

21. I think he was trying too hard
to look tough and he clearly was nervous and uncomfortable. Maybe he saw David Gregory's career move after he'd asked some hard questions at the White House. Sadly Gregory's shining moments were a flash in the pan and he's been nothing but a disappointment ever since.

If these guys focused more on being real journalists instead of self-promotion, they probably would create more lasting careers.
