Panama signs whaling agreement
Representatives of the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay ratified an agreement Thursday in in Buenos Aires that pledged their support to the conservation of whales.
These countries, all members of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), held meetings this week in advance of the 63rd annual IWC meeting which will take place in Jersey, Great Britain, in July.
The agreement basically reiterates the position of the countries, known as the Buenos Aires group, outlined in a previous agreement approved by the group in December 2007.
The current document upholds the 1986 moratorium on commercial hunting of whales, the end of the scientific hunting of animals and their commitment to the promotion of the non-lethal use of whales.
