Why did Rick Perry not once, but twice, call Herman Cain "brother?"

He didn't refer to any of the other candidates as "brother" - he called them by their names.

Herman, I love you, brother, but let me tell you something, you don’t need to have a big analysis to figure this thing out. Go to New Hampshire, where they don’t have a sales tax, and you’re fixing to give them one.

They’re not interested in 9-9-9. What they’re interested in is flatter and fairer. At the end of the week, I’m going to be laying out a plan that clearly — I’ll bump plans with you, brother, and we’ll see who has the best idea about how you get this country working again.

And what's up with the offer to "bump plans" with him? Is that like the Bump, or a chest bump, or maybe bumping booties?

This certainly says something about Rick Perry and his comfort level around African Americans. He reminds me of the guy who suddenly starts talking in Ebonics whenever he gets around black people. At least he didn't say, "Right ON, brother" and hold his hand out for him to give him five.

Rick Perry’s Texas side was on full display at Tuesday night’s Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas. Every time he could throw in a hand gesture or an aw, shucks, he did it. It had an effect — Perry seemed more comfortable on the debate stage in Vegas than he has in the campaign so far, and more than a few pundits said he came away stronger than he went in.

But some of his good ol’ boy antics raised eyebrows. While tearing into Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan, Perry called Cain “brother,” twice. Then, while he turned his ire on Mitt Romney, Perry called the former governor of Massachusetts “sir” (disdainfully, to be sure) more than once.

People noticed the difference. The Washington Post’s Nia-Malika Henderson compiled this rundown of concerns about the different terms.

all are tags that redneck jackasses put at the end of their sentences. And in the context of Rick Perry, he was using it to imply "hey i am a badass and what i am getting ready to say is how it should be..." it was redneck code, kinda like a gang sign.

I honestly think it's just his speech pattern.

There was a video clip of him calling a (white) college student "brother", big surprise that he was also speaking in a disparaging and rude manner on that occasion, as well. I think he said, "Yeah, you don't know what you're talkin' about, brother" in reference to a legitimate question by the individual.

Lots of white redneck-esque macho guys speak this way.
