Steve Benen:
Cain’s desperate search for someone to blame As Herman Cain’s sexual-harassment controversy enters its fourth day, the Republican campaign seems to be spending less time addressing the questions and more time in a desperate search to find someone to blame.
First, the accusations were the media’s fault. Then it was liberals’ fault. Then it was racists’ fault. By late yesterday,
it was Rick Perry’s fault.
<...>
At this point, I’m not even sure why this part of the blame game matters anymore.
Politico reported that Cain was accused of sexual harassment, and regardless of who first tipped the reporters off to the allegations, Cain
really was accused of sexual harassment. Blaming the media, liberals, racists, and/or Perry doesn’t change the underlying facts, nor does it explain why Cain’s version of events has changed so dramatically over the course of a couple of days.
Wildly pointing fingers is absurd. If Cain’s accusers are lying, then they’re to blame; if Cain sexually harassed those women, then he’s to blame. He either committed these misdeeds or didn’t. What difference does it make who tipped off
Politico?
<...>
Seriously, did Cain and the Kochs actually believe this would remain a secret while seeking the highest profile job in the country?
