If Romney Gets The Nomination What Are The Odds Of A Serious Conservative Third Party Run |
|
Even a seven percent showing like John Anderson in 1980 could tip the scale to President Obama or buttress his victory.
It would have to be a conservative with a high profile like Herman Cain or Sarah Palin.

They will bear any burden, pay any price, to get that awful Negro out of the White House, and if that means voting for Romney, for Romney they will vote.
It'll work too. Get ready for eight years of Romney. Motivated voters make the difference.
But that's ok. We will have Sent A Message. We will Not Have Been Ignored. Attention Will Have Been Paid. No more Being Taken for Granted!
And isn't that the important thing? We will have come Out From Under the Bus.
(Next time -- 2024 is my estimate -- they'll pass a public option.)

3. Very low odds of that happening. Republicans are desperate to win the White House. |
|
They will stick together.

The establishment Republicon country clubbers are salivating over Mittens, but they'll have their hands full convincing the tea partiers who know him as a flip-flopper. However, most of that group will bite the bullet and vote for Romney.
The real challenge is the fundies. They absolutely do NOT want to give the LDS missionaries poaching their flocks another talking point to use in peoples' doorways. In fact, they'll be so damned pissed at the rest of the Repukes for nominating Romney (still a talking point for Elder Obnoxious) that they won't care if Obama wins. They'll just sit there with a smug look on their faces as they vote for some hard-core snake handler.

4. If Romney gets the GOP nomination, that will be a serious conservative challenge |

Now, if you're asking about a serious right wing challenge, I don't know.
The other posters who have posted up to now believe that the right wing will fall in line and get behind the nominee. The problem with that theory is that it assumes that Tea Partiers are rational.

He only needs to siphon off several percentage points.

7. There are tens of thousands or more of religiously conservative Republicans |
|
who will not vote for a Mormon. They will never vote for Obama, but would likely be more than willing to vote for a third party candidate that lines up with their views.

9. Rachel Maddow thinks that Palin may run |
|
Jansing interviewed Maddow a couple of weeks ago and discussed a third party run if Romney is the GOP nominee. Maddow thinks that Palin may go after Romney to protect her standing with the tea party

And she'd drag away both tea partiers and fundies from Romney. Besides, a loss wouldn't finish her, except with the Repuke party.
Presuming an Obama win over Romney, 2016 will be wide open in both major parties, and Caribou Barbie could make a real serious try at a third party win then.
