but when I think back to Ronnie Raygun and the fact he got elected, at the time I couldn't believe the Republican party came down to a washed up "B" actor and washing machine salesman, a guy whose main message was cocking he his head, shaking it and smiling, and a dumb "there you go again" line that brought people to their knees in religious ecstasy. I think even "oops" (which is pathetic) is a more poweful message than the utter nonsense of 1980.

| 5. However the red dwindles, they and their lobbyists ride the blue dogs hard. |
|
Let's also focus on the fact that there are still 26 Democratic blue dogs in the House and 17 in the Senate. When teapublican numbers go down there are still multiple lobbyists to keep democratic blue dogs in line.

| 7. I wish that were true in PA. This state just elected a teabagger US senator and governor and now |
|
control both the legislature and state senate. Teabaggers are powerful in W. PA and and Romney is leading Obama in the polls statewide.

we have been dismissive of republicans before. I recall in 2009 Rachel Maddow suggesting, with good reason, that republicans were doomed, only to see them win sweeping victories in 2010. Progressives would ask why anyone would vote republicans back in control after what they had done under Bush, but that is precisely what millions of Americans did.
As loathsome as that may have been to progressives, the fact is that Republicans see things differently than we do. There is a boatload of literature in political psych that demonstrates how the conservative mind works, especially regarding fear (of change, others, the unknown), and obedience to authority and the in-group. We have repeatedly seen how conservative voters seem indifferent to facts, science, empiricism, and logic. It is not something I would be proud of, if I were a conservative, but they just blow it off. Just one more reason to distrust academicians.
So, yeah, it amazes me too that republican presidential candidates don't get laughed off the stage. They are exhibiting massive intellectual dishonesty. But the fact remains, republican voters process events and data differently.
They will be out in force in 2012. It won't matter who they are voting for. They will be voting against Obama. That is all the reason they need.
