long time life partners, Barney Frank and Jim Ready, wed this weekend.

Oddly enough, journalists around the country seem to have picked up the story before the Globe.

The officiant was the Governor of Massachcusetts, Deval Patrick, who serves as one of Obama's campaign co-chairs, as he did in 2007-08. (Axelrod managed Patrick's gubernatorial campaign in 2006, which was good practice for the Obama campaign.) Coincidentally (or perhaps not so coincidentally), the Governor's daughter is also an out gay. I don't know if that factored into the couple's decision about who would officiate.

They married in Newton, whose district Frank has long represented in the U.S. House.

Frank is the first federal legislator in a same gender marriage that is recognized by a state. (Same gender marriages have always existed, but governments have been damnably slow to recognize that reality!)

As almost every DUer knows, Barney Frank has long been openly gay and has also long been an advocate for equal rights for gays, including, of course, of recognizing same gender marriage in Massachusetts.

As I proudly say every chance I get, Massachusetts was the first U.S. state to recognize same gender marriage (though Vermont was, I believe, the first on civil unions, then considered a breakthough).

OT, but your post got me to think about that expression for the first time.

You make an honest woman out of someone you slept with by marrying her. That means that having sex with you outside marriage made her dishonest? i would never have described it in terms of honesty.

I guess the word had broader connotations when the expression originated.
