LA GOP rep fine with vouchers for private religious schools....just not muslim schools.

That alarmed her, and she is not happy about that.

Vouchers are one way the education reformers are using to make an end run around public education and public schools. But they only want it to apply to Christian private schools.

Vouchers mean taxpayers foot the bill for students to drop out of public schools and attend private religious schools with their selective religious messages. Once the student leaves the public schools the state money assigned to the public school goes with the student.

This policy and the exodus to charter schools are wrecking the finances of the public schools.

Lousiana's Republican Rep. Valarie Hodges is upset about the new private school voucher law. At first, she was all for it because:

“I liked the idea of giving parents the option of sending their children to a public school or a Christian school,” Hodges said.

But then she found out the voucher money could be used to send kids to Muslim schools as well, and that was more than she could stomach.

“Unfortunately will not be limited to the Founders’ religion,” Hodges said. “We need to insure that it does not open the door to fund radical Islam schools. There are a thousand Muslim schools that have sprung up recently. I do not support using public funds for teaching Islam anywhere here in Louisiana.”

Ah yes. Taxpayers should fund religious education, so long as it's my religion.

And we must make sure it does not open the door to radical beliefs held by fundamentalist Christians either, such as young earth creationism and women submitting to their husbands.
