My friend from DU3 just had a massive flame-out IRL |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-14-12 02:56 PM by Leopolds Ghost
We're back to having nopony involved with any office support (and it being on the verge of collapse after 12 years) because I had recruited him to be outreach director for our project based on his resume. Unfortunately he had a massive falling out with me recently which caught me completely by surprise (in part because I found out he's upset at me for still supporting Occ -- he seems to blame me for the antics of some of the wild and crazy occ'ers as if I somehow condoned them, which is strange because I originally asked for help on the occu-Forum and he was the one person who responded.) I'm tempted to ask NYC Skp to put me in touch via PM with whoevever the mods know in my metro area over on DU3. Since that includes people like Skinner (if you get my drift), you'd figure there'd be a DU meetup in the same area that I could maybe find out if folks there are interested in a community project that was started by a fellow activist DUer (me). We have surprisingly few Democratic activist folks involved in our project anyhow... it's all lefties and independents and hippies and eccentrics. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I intensely dislike the local Democratic Party power structure, it's exclusively geared to the upper middle class constituents.
The worst part about it is that the project which was floundering for want of a location was an offshoot venture we were working with several other activist groups, in part to try and create a source of income to pay my fellow DUer (who just got into a physical altercation with me and then quit).
NYC, if you get this message please PM me here or on DU3... I need to find out if the ex-mods can refer me to anyone else in my area (besides Skinner) who might be interested. I'm a bit reluctant to post another call-out saying "here's where I am, here's what I'm doing" but if I could PM folks, even just invite them to use our space for a DU meetup perhaps.

1. When I talk about the Dem power structure in my area |
|
To give you an idea, my neighborhood is known as a hotbed for the Democratic Party, with a lot of policy wonks and activists. Despite this, there is no progressive club in my town, there is no group advocating for social justice.
They all exclusively rally around whatever city and state elected officials want them to work on because that is what their jobs depend on, whatever cause is supported by the party officials. And another reason my friend attacked me is because he says that I am hated in my community by these same affluent policy wonks, and that they have come to him and told him not to work with me or my family.

Been down that road before.
I found that ignoring them is the best way. Getting stressed-out is a waste of your energy.
At least he told you why.
Just remember: A Warrior is not judged by their strength, but the strength of their enemies.
I have enemies in high places. Welcome to the club. :hi:

5. Sorry, Leo. As usual, I am wishing you all the best. |
|
NYC got your message.
Maybe you could also post on DU3 (without refereces to any problems with DUers) and ask anyone who wants to join forces with you to pm you and you will then try to set up a "meet up" of all who reply.
You might also try to set up a club or group in your area of local residents for like-minded people, just to get together.
Take it in stride, my friend.
You know that old break up line, "It's not you. It's me."
Well, it's true.
When people act out, it's usually a lot more about them than it is about you.

7. Unfortunately it seems worse than I thought -- I can't really say more |
|
Suffice to say that if he sees this thread he's prepared to wage war on the other members of our organization, including my family. When I learned this, I had still been operating under the assumption that some measure of reconciliation was possible. Basically he wants me and my family and friends uninvolved from the project or the people he knows will refuse to support it now and in the future... and possibly come at us in other ways -- involving unspecified back channel contacts. Nobody will tell me what was said, so this vague message is all I know. He hasn't quit, and the strange thing is before I heard this much, I didn't want him to quit, which is why they were forced to tell me this much (to dissuade me from reaching out to him). Sad that it's someone from DU... although granted, not someone who's been on DU a long time, or has much loyalty to the site. I won't say any more because I don't want to provoke any trouble.

9. From the project? We don't want to lose it because of |
|
The actions of any one person, after so many years :-( Besides the people claiming that they could assist us if I wasn't involved don't seem to have the best interests of the project at heart -- they basically act as if the project as it exists today would still be there if it hadn't been for the willingness of me and my friends to keep it going -- they aren't even inclined to pay lip service to our efforts to keep it going so many years -- in service of finding people to replace me -- which I'd be happy to see, because I'd like to go back and get a degree -- and when you press them on it they basically admit they like nothing about the present concept of a community resource ctr for activists and just want to do something better with the (highly valuable) space.

It seems you don't fit into their 'Business Model.'
Hang tough. The 'Political Machine' that current political parties adhere to is all about Money and Control.
