People throw around the word "icon." But we lost a real one.

RIP, Pete Seeger. Voice of Justice for well over seventy years.

Unions, the poor, the peace time draft in the 1940s, "ticky tacky" housing developments, civil rights, peace, brotherhood, refusing to rat out anyone during the McCarthy hearings, Occupy Wall Street, Farm Aid and on and on.

I thought he would follow his wife of seventy years, Then, after she died, I saw Democracy Now interview him and I saw an article about his singing with Willie Nelson at an event to benefit farmers; and I hoped his work might keep him going for a few more years. But, he did follow his wife after all.

If there is a heaven, they are smiling lovingly at each other now.

To quote jon Stewart, "We lost another great one."

2. Pete Seeger was an actual American hero. Not some faked up Bush style hero.

Now Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Willie Nelson will have to carry on without him.

3. And none of them are spring chickens.

Why do we call a young chicken a spring chicken, anyway?

4. I believe the baby chicks were traditionally hatched in the spring.

And they were young of course. My uncle, cousins and grandfather raised chickens in a small way when I was a youngster. I remember my mother calling the little chicken's eggs Pullet eggs. They were much smaller than the massive eggs we usually got. Their chickens were truly free range. My mother's family had a wonderful farm that is still in the family. When I was a child my favorite thing was to visit the farm.

I just had my giant free range chicken eggs that my wife buys from friends. :)

I have always lived in cities and don't know from such things.

My father told me that people used to bring fresh eggs and home grown veggies to work and sell them to their co-workers. I have had freshly laid eggs only when I leave home, though. Used to get them every morning in Bermuda from some nuns, who'd carry them to my door in their aprons. Only time in my life that I touched an egg that still warm from the chicken. Startled me the first time.
