vinegar method for years. It does work great.
I buy baking soda & vineger in bulk at Costco for this very reason.

I've been adding white vinegar to my laundry for a while now. It boosts the cleaning power of the natural detergent that I use and makes the clothes soft-- gets rid of odors too.
When I think of all the years I used harsh chemicals to clean... yuck!
