Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon in Critical Condition After Stroke; State Prepares for the Worst

Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon was in critical condition Tuesday following a massive stroke in a hotel room that left state officials preparing for the worst.

With the 73-year-old governor in a drug-induced coma and on a ventilator, doctors said Monday that the next day or two would be critical.

CHICAGO Sept. 9 —
Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon was in critical condition Tuesday following a massive stroke in a hotel room that left state officials preparing for the worst.

With the 73-year-old governor in a drug-induced coma and on a ventilator, doctors said Monday that the next day or two would be critical.

"This is up to Mother Nature and his own ability to bounce back, his own brain's ability to recover," said Dr. Hunt Batjer, chairman of neurological surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "There's no way anybody in this audience can predict it."

Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan assumed some of O'Bannon's duties but was not officially named acting governor. "I would just ask all Hoosiers to join hands and say a prayer," he said.
