Republicans wants White House to improve sales pitch for $87 billion Iraq

Republican lawmakers pressed the White House on Wednesday to do a more forceful job of publicly selling its request for $87 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan as President Bush formally sent the plan to Congress.

Though Bush is likely to get largely what he wants with broad bipartisan support, GOP legislators also served notice that they would examine it closely -- and might make some changes.

The comments underscored the political challenges Bush's proposal has faced since he announced the proposal Sept. 7 in nationally televised address.

Some Republicans have flinched at the cost, which will only add to record federal deficits already expected to exceed $400 billion this year and next.
