Ukraine Begins Phased Pullout of Troops From Iraq

Ukraine started withdrawing its troops from Iraq on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said that 137 Ukrainian servicemen had returned to Ukraine on two defense ministry planes.

Ukraine started deploying its 1,650 strong force in Iraq in August 2003 after a decision by ex-President Leonid Kuchma with the approval of the parliament on June 5, 2003. At the beginning of March, the newly elected Ukrainian president, Viktor Yushchenko, ordered a phased pullout of the troops.
