SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea wants an open and explicitU.S. apology for calling it an outpost of tyranny as aprecondition for returning to nuclear talks, its senior envoyto the United Nations was quoted as saying on Friday.

The demand was made as he elaborated on an extensivestatement issued on Thursday by the North that called forsix-party talks aimed at ending its nuclear programs to beturned into comprehensive disarmament talks.

Pyongyang said that since it was a nuclear state, it mustnow be treated as being on an equal footing with the UnitedStates.

"The conditions and justification for the six-party talksmust be set up correctly, and that is for the United States tosincerely apologize for the 'outpost of tyranny' comment andwithdraw it," the North's deputy U.N. ambassador Han Song-ryolwas quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency.
