7. Protests Planned as Controversial Cardinal Takes Vatican Mass
The Scotsman

Protests were planned in the Vatican today when the American cardinal at the centre of a child abuse scandal was celebrating Mass in St Peter’s Basilica

Leaders of the US advocacy group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests had flown to Rome to protest, saying Cardinal Bernard Law’s presence was painful to clergy sexual abuse victims and embarrassing to Catholics.

Cardinal Law resigned as archbishop of Boston in December 2002 after unsealed court records revealed he had allowed priests guilty of abusing children to move among parish assignments and had not notified the public.

Meanwhile Catholics’ thoughts turned to who might replace their beloved pope as the cardinals, silenced by an unprecedented pledge to not reveal their thinking, met again to plan next week’s conclave to select a new leader.
