37. Bush to host news conference on Thursday night

WHITE HOUSE High gasoline prices and changes to the Social Security system are expected to come up during a Thursday evening presidential news conference.

It will be President Bush's sixth news conference since his re-election.It's scheduled for 8:30 Eastern Daylight Time in the East Room. The White House has asked T-V networks to broadcast the prime-time event.White House press secretary Scott McClellan says Bush will open the session with a statement of about ten minutes dealing with Social Security.The media event ties in with the administration's 60-day promotional campaign to push changes in the retirement system.Bush held his last news conference on March 16th.

"I've earned capital in this election, and I'm going to spend it for what I told the people I'd spend it on: Social Security, tax reform, moving the economy forward, education and winning the war on terrorism," Bush said two days after he won re-election.

But three months into his second term, Bush's bold agenda is bogged down by public skepticism about some of his proposals, growing resistance from Democrats, dissension within his party's ranks and what some analysts consider second-term overconfidence.
