Teachers plan $50 million fight against Schwarzenegger agenda

Saturday, June 11, 2005

(06-11) 16:19 PDT Los Angeles (AP) --

The union representing 335,000 teachers approved a dues hike Saturday as it prepared a $50 million war chest to fight education reform measures backed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The 800-member governing council of the California Teachers Association approved a dues assessment of $60 a year for up to three years. The money will replenish funds the union plans to use to fight a November special-election that will include measures to raise tenure requirements for public school teachers and limit increases in state education funding.

The dues increase does not need rank-and-file approval.

Schwarzenegger was expected Monday to declare the special election for November.

"The minute the governor declared war on teachers and firefighters and nurses, we had to come back at him," CTA President Barbara E. Kerr said after the vote.
