India gains on US labour shortage

NEW DELHI: A Nasscom report warned on Thursday that the US could lose growth opportunities worth $2 trillion due to a massive labour shortage to the tune of 5.6 million workers by 2010.

This shortage could be bridged through immigration to the tune of 3.2 million workers, and offshoring to the tune of 1.3 million jobs, the report said, adding that India was strongly positioned to claim over 50 per cent of offshored work on the strength of its cost and language advantages.

The report, titled The Impact of Global Sourcing on the US Economy 2003-2010 has been commissioned by the software lobby in association with New York-based business research firm Evalueserve Inc.
