in a situation where failure makes the national news or ends up with people dead. Remember their jobs, they get no credit from anyone for letting people through (I assume you smile and say thank you when it works well? or do you only pay attention to them when there's a problem?) on the other hand, if they let something through, they get fired and held up for public ridicule. This for 14 bucks an hour.
I'm not defending them, per se, but the job really, really sucks. you are set up for failure, everyone hates you, and there is no upside. Remember that when you meet one in a bad mood, the last thousand people scowled at her, at the best and yelled at her at the worst.
