Bush Takes Texas Break to Raise Cash, Play Host to an Ally
By Will Lester Associated Press Writer
Published: Jul 18, 2003

WACO, Texas (AP) - President Bush is spending a long weekend in Texas raising campaign cash and hosting Italian leader and Iraq war ally Silvio Berlusconi at his ranch - a break from the partisan battles in Washington.

Bush is raising money in Dallas on Friday and in Houston on Saturday in his eighth and ninth fund-raisers of the re-election campaign. He also raised money in Washington in May for the GOP's congressional campaign committees.

His campaign has already collected $34.4 million for his re-election from the middle of May to the end of June. That's more than all nine Democratic opponents raised in the second quarter of the year.

Bush campaign officials declined Thursday to estimate how many people will attend the two fund-raisers, or how much will be raised at the $2,000-per-person events. The president has one other fund-raising event scheduled this month, in Dearborn, Mich., on July 24.

The Bush campaign points to his success in fund raising as a sign of his public support. (snip/...)
