DURHAM - Doris "Granny D" Haddock promised nothing short of "the renewal of our American Revolution" on Friday when she brought her grassroots run for U.S. Senate to the University of New Hampshire.

Haddock, a 94-year-old Democrat who became a cultural icon in 1999 when she walked across the country to support campaign-finance reform, will face Republican incumbent Judd Gregg in the Nov. 2 election.

She can’t wait.

"I love the smell of landslides in the morning," she said, invoking the famous line from the movie "Apocalypse Now," and anticipating a campaign win.
